Understanding The
ENNEAGRAM

The Enneagram is an ancient system of understanding human personality and behavior. Originally it was used as a tool for spiritual development and transcending ego states and conflicts. According to the Enneagram there are nine human personality types. Each type is distinguished by a unique and specific set of positive and negative characteristics. The negative characteristics are seen as compulsions creating dysfunctional behaviors, mood and emotional reactions to other people and the world and central to one's self-concept.

Determining one's Enneagram type leads the way to increased self-understanding. Each type has different compulsive patterns which are used as primary defensive strategies for creating a sense of security and well being in the world. Learning about one's compulsions affords one the opportunity of choice. With awareness comes the ability to choose more healthy strategies and begin to face what the compulsions were enabling us to avoid. For individuals suffering from Alcoholism or Chemical Dependencies learning how their personality type relates to addictive thoughts and behaviors can indeed be liberating and serve as a valuable aid in becoming and remaining "clean and sober".

In this workshop participants will learn about the nine personality types and identify their own type. We will also explore and examine:

• Assessing the personality type of others.

• Guidelines and strategies for overcoming compulsions/ recommendations for personal growth.

• Correlation's with addictive behavior and strategies for using the Enneagram in treating Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency.

• Using the Enneagram as a tool for spiritual development.
