Clinical Supervision

Clinical Supervision is a workshop for individuals who carry supervisory responsibilities for Alcohol and Drug Abuse counselors and/or Mental Health counselors. This workshop is also appropriate for counselors' with at least three years of experience in drug/alcohol or mental health counseling and who anticipate or aspire to supervisory positions.

The Clinical Supervision workshop will identify and describe the skills and processes (including documentation), comprising Clinical Supervision. Participants will be offered opportunities to identify their own styles of supervision; their personal roadblocks to effective supervision; and to develop strategies for overcoming personal roadblocks.

Format

Lecture and experiential activities will utilize materials gathered from research in the field of supervision. The Enneagram will be utilized as a tool to explore areas of personal difficulty in carrying out supervisory responsibilities. Attention will be devoted to distinguishing areas of supervisory difficulty; identifying personality characteristics supervisors experience difficulty with;
and creating individual strategies for overcoming these difficulties.

The training is divided into four modules. Module one and two require 3-4 days. Module three is most effective when presented every 3-4 weeks for three months following one and two, and monthly thereafter. Module four (evaluation) is designed so that it may also be presented as a stand alone unit. (This can certainly be modified to suit the needs of an agency.)

Module One: Explores the historical and theoretical basis of clinical supervision. Supervisory models are described and their individual benefits and shortcomings are discussed. Specific emphasis will be placed upon tailoring supervisory method and style to agency requirements. Legal parameters involved in supervision will also be discussed.

Module Two: Discussion of real life supervisory situations, dilemmas, conflicts, and difficulties. Examination of what causes conflict in supervision and what to do about it. Exploration of effective supervisory interventions and role-play of realistic situations.

Module Three: Review of back home experiences utilizing newly learned information and intervention strategies. Brainstorming solutions and creating effective working models for each participant in their particular agency situation.

Module Four: Evaluation is a module designed specifically to teach clinical supervisors how to conduct effective competency- based counselor evaluations. These evaluations are designed to encourage counselor professional growth, as well as to give supervisors a tool to effectively manage their clinical staffs. The evaluation method(s) presented are designed to promote skill development in the twelve core functions, and meet legal and department of labor criteria. This module fits well at the end of the supervisory series. It may also stand-alone.

Goals and Objectives:
